I have a Gio Ibanez Guitar, nothing flashey, using S-Gear, but a good sound, and would like to hear from the forum, what would be the best setup to get somewhere near a Mark Knopfler sound preset

The only time I looked up Knopfler's tone it was a Komet amp, and I loved that sound so much I bought one. But I don't know of another that sounds quite like that Ken Fischer design (one of his last, possibly his very last). But now that you've asked, and knowing S-Gear to a decent degree, I think I'd start with the Wayfarer. From it, I've been able to get some of that syrupy thickness present in Mark's lead sound. If I come across a preset that's in the ballpark I'll mention it.

Edit: much of that tone is in Mark's fingers, so experiment with your technique as well.

Just did another search and it looks like Mark has been using a '59 Bassman for more recent work. Great amp.

I have a compressor, is there anything that I do not need i.e chorus, tremelo, etc.

Have you tried the Sultans Tweed and Sultans Lead presets? Those are meant to be Knopfler-y (Sultans of Swing, get it?). They sound pretty good, though somewhat pickup dependent, as usual. Do the classic 57 with a 4x10 cabinet as a starting point and you'll get there quickly enough.

I have tried different combinations, especially the recommended Wayfarer with clean sounds, but still cannot get anywhere near the Knopfler sound. It cannot be the type of guitar ,because he uses three or four different to get the sounds, there must be somebody out there who has the knowhow to put me on the right track

I may have jumped the gun somewhat, and after downloading the S Gear Manual, realize Wayfarer starts at preset 40 through to fifty and 40 and 41 already show promise already. I think I am getting somewhere.
