TOPIC: Valve Buffer for Scuffham Amps

Valve Buffer for Scuffham Amps 2 months 6 days ago #26165

Hi all,
I was watching the video by Vertex Effects on the 'Fryette Valvulator Mini.' As far as I can gather, the video was recommending using one of these to basically get the feel of tubes going into a modeller - maybe some tone shaping also.
Has anyone had experience with this unit or similar and does it give more of a tube 'feel' to a modeller? And most importantly, would it make Scuffham sound/play more like a tube amp?

To me at least, the amp models in S-Gear sound more tube amp like than many real tube amps I tried.
I wouldn’t bother with anything other than a decent interface between the guitar and the computer, unless of course you are looking for some very specific tone shaping that none of the S-Gear amps could provide.

In my experience, these types of devices don't add much value to the equation. When using sims, the most realistic tube emulation occurs in the software. As long as you get a strong, hi-fi signal to S-Gear it will do the rest. The "warming" boxes used just after the guitar tend to dull the signal and I, personally, think that's a step backwards.

Thanks for the feedback. I think this is one of those scenarios where we don't know until we have played with the thing for some time to see if it really makes a difference. I had been using a DSM Simplifier X, mainly for zero latency, but have now gone back to Scuffham as it just instantly sounds great. This is probably me seeing another shiny box that may add about 10% to the experience, if that.

If authenticity is the goal I think there may actually be a higher chance of losing 10%. It's simply not the right location in the signal chain to be adding tube warmth. But I agree that the only way to know if it's for you is to give it a try. And if you do let us know how it goes.
