TOPIC: Issue automating pedal bypass in Ableton

Issue automating pedal bypass in Ableton 1 month 2 weeks ago #24919

In Ableton racks, it's pretty common to map a single knob (macro) to both a device's parameter, and its on/off state. In this case, I'd like to have a Compression knob in my effects rack that dials in the SG-S Compressor's ratio. When this is set to 0, I would also like the pedal to be bypassed.

This is currently not possible because S-Gear associates a value of 0 to "don't bypass" and a value greater than 0 to "bypass". Hence, the full range of my macro (127 values, minus one of the extremes) ends up associated with "bypass".

For this purpose, S-Gear would have to expose the opposite parameter, i.e. "pedal on" (true when the value is greater than 0). I realize this would break backwards-compatibility, but I think it's worth considering given it enables easier integration with DAWs.

I don’t know about Ableton, but in some other DAWs/hosts you can set custom min/max values or scaling curves.

I use Gig Performer, and it’s an option in the parameter/widget’ settings to ‘reverse’ the parameter value - so 0 becomes bypass.

Thanks for the answer. Reversing or changing min/max won't work in this case. No matter how you remap the range, it's still the case that a single knob position will not bypass, while all remaining knob positions will bypass*. Basically I'd have to "waste" a knob just for this binary parameter.

* For instance, imagine you reverse the range so it goes from 1 to 0. Then the initial position of the knob is 1 (bypass), and each subsequent position is > 1 (still bypass) until you reach the endpoint 0 (don't bypass).
