Levon Helm died a week or so ago

He was drummer and singer with The Band. Actually they all sang, and very well too.

For anyone who is not familiar with the music, pick up a copy of The Band Greatest Hits; as compilations go, it's a really good collection - and probably on amazon for some giveaway price. You will definitely know the first song 'The Weight', it was performed recently on the outro of the film It Might Get Loud. My favorites include 'Up on Cripple Creek', 'Rag Mama Rag' & 'Acadian Driftwood'. Martin Scorsese directed a film of their farewell concert - also worth getting.

I overlooked The Band when I was first getting into guitar, probably because there were no flamboyant guitar solos. But over time they have become one of my favorites. Soulful, rootsy, and enduring musc.
